2005: A slow-moving storm dumped copious rain on southern Quebec. Sherbrooke
got 105.5 mm on top of an earlier 153 mm. Floods in the Eastern Townships
forced some 200 people from their homes and closed roads. The St. François
and other rivers overflowed, leaving up to 1.5 m of water on farmers'
fields. One grower canoed around his strawberry patch, but most growers had
finished harvesting.

2004: Tropical storm Nicole merged with an intense storm system about 600 km
southwest of Nova Scotia. The hybrid storm brought winds of 90 km/h to all
Atlantic Provinces, although western Cape Breton felt the strongest winds,
gusting to 130 km/h. The high winds uprooted trees and ripped down
electrical wires. The Annapolis Valley was also hit hard, right in the
middle of the apple harvest.

2008: Go fishing or stay on shore? For the past 2 weeks in the Bay of Fundy,
lobster fishers were only able to go out every 3 days or so because of
strong, persistent winds. Each postponed day increases the risk taken by
fishers to make up lost time. Further, when winds churn up the seabed,
lobsters don't feed until the water settles down.
