Yesterday was fairly mild,especially for January,with temps a few degrees
above freezing and mostly sunny.Temps dropped to slightly below freezing in
the evening and it was generally clear.More mild weather is expected until
next week,however,there is no serious cold or stormy weather expected for
atleast the next seven days.

Today..A mix of sun and cloud. High plus 3.

Tonight..Partly cloudy. Low plus 1 except minus 5 inland.

12 January


2005: Following several days of snow, rain, and freezing rain, Vancouver,
BC, distributed more than 95 tonnes of free de-icing salt to 11,000
residents. At times, the lineup to get salt was almost 5 blocks long. In 3
days, officials stopped the free distribution because of decreased demand
and the coming of warm weather.

brisk in the afternoon and evening.Overnight temps were down to only a few
degrees be;ow freezing.There's more mild weather on the way for the next few
days with no precip expected until Monday.

properties and businesses over the weekend-12 on Saturday and 15 on Sunday.
Apparently, the recent frost and cold caused buildings to heave, tripping
several alarm motion sensors.

1911: Of livestock, sheep suffer the most from cold. In Sweet Grass, AB,
snow had drifted to the top of a 15-m-high cutbank, and 1,100 sheep walked
off the cliff, more than 50 perishing. Another rancher lost a huge number of
his 3,000-head flock, many straying before and during the storm. Another 700
sheep drifted onto the Milk River, near Coutts, after their herder abandoned
them to seek shelter.

Yesterday we saw a major change in temps through the day.It started out very
cold in the morning but steadily rose to well above freezing by the
afternoon.Temps dropped to below freezing in the overnight hours but only by
a few degrees.It is expected to be relatively mild today,some showers and
flurries are on the way for tomorrow.



Today's Forecast: Today..Mainly sunny. Wind becoming south 20 km/h late this
afternoon.

High plus 4.

Tonight..Increasing cloudiness. Periods of rain beginning this

evening and ending overnight. Amount 5 mm. Fog patches overnight.

2006: In Winnipeg, MB, officials couldn't recall more open water on the Red
and Assiniboine Rivers in mid-January in 35 years. Instead of skating,
skiing, or snowshoeing, residents strolled alongside the waterways in the
balmy weather. Only 10 people, rather than the usual 30, signed up for the
University of Manitoba's winter-survival workshop. Few could imagine
building an igloo with slush.

Yesterday was a sunny but cold day with high temps only at a few degrees
below 0.The evening was clear and very cold and it is still cold this
morning.However,we are expecting a significant warm up today.Highs will be
on the plus side and the mild air is expected to stay with us into next
week.

Today's weather trivia: 8 January


1950: The clock at the post office in Lethbridge, AB, bonged at the wrong
time, confusing passersby. Officials said that due to accumulated dust, fog,
and freezing temperatures, the hands on the clock had become frozen, causing
the large timepiece to act up. The post office could not say when the clock
would sound the correct time-at least not until the weatherman could promise
warmer weather.

We had a mixed bag of weather yesterday with some snow and some rain.A
couple of cms of snow fell in the late morning and early afternoon.The snow
changed to rain in the mid afternoon and by the evening temps began to drop
back to below freezing.Road conditions became quite slippery for a few
hours.The precip ended overnight and temps are cold this morning.Some more
flurries are expected this morning and then a warm up begins tomorrow with
almost Spring-like temps expected for the rest of the week.

flurries this

morning. Wind becoming north 30 km/h this morning. Temperature

falling to minus 6 this afternoon.

2008: Heavy fog in southern Ontario led to school closures,
cancelled/postponed buses and flights, and highway closures. It was the
worst where snow on the ground cooled unseasonably warm air. In rural areas,
visibility was zero, stranding hundreds of drivers. One man died in a foggy
crash in the Ottawa Valley on a day that set a daily record for the warmest
temperature, +9.5°C, in over 60 years.

Yesterday we saw temps flip flop from a few degrees above freezing to a few
degrees below throughout most of the day.There were a few passing flurries
in the morning and afternoon.The evening was generally clear and cold.We can
expect a few flurries or showers over the next day or so with temps rising
to a few degrees above freezing to start the week.There are no bitterly cold
temps or storms expected this week.



Today's Forecast: Today..Increasing cloudiness. Flurries beginning late this
morning

except showers along the coast late this afternoon. Amount 2 to

4 cm. Wind becoming south 20 km/h gusting to 40 this afternoon. High

1904: The weather turned bitterly cold, and old-timers around Crooked Creek,
YT, said the wind would "blow the hair off a dog." One musher tied a
handkerchief over his face, covering everything but his eyes. A mass of ice,
the congealed moisture from sweat and breath, stuck to his face, making
breathing difficult. The ends of his fingers stung.
