The big storm,'Nemo',blew in here last evening.Winds have been near
hurricane force for most of last night and this morning.There is not a lot
of snow here and we have been having periods of ice pellets.The wind is
diminishing somewhat now but the storm will be with us for most of the day.

 Today's weather trivia: 9 February 2009: Residents in the eastern Prairies
woke to slippery roads and sidewalks resulting from rain and freezing rain.
It had been 9 years since it last rained in Winnipeg in February. Today was
possibly the rainiest February day ever: 26.5 mm. Highways resembled used
car lots with so many in ditches. A worker died after a metal roof at a
Portage la Prairie vegetable farm collapsed under snow and ice.

 Today's weather trivia: 7 February 2008: Just after 9:00 AM, a Calgary, AB,
woman was sitting on her bed, chatting on her phone, when a melon-size chunk
of blue-tint ice crashed through the roof, narrowly missing her. The shards
of ice hitting the back of her neck and head made her think she had been
shot, but Transport Canada said the ice likely fell from a passing airplane.
It left a 45-cm hole in the roof of her house.

 Today's weather trivia: 4 February 1924: Blizzards across Newfoundland
contributed to the sad death of a Methodist minister from Fogo. Overtaken by
weather as he was returning from Seldom Comeby, 15 km away, instead of
turning back to shelter, he forged ahead against the increasingly violent
gale. Rescuers found his body about 2 km from his home. The blizzards also
buried railway tracks, blocking trains across the province.

 Today's weather trivia: 3 February 1955: A pilot flying from Vancouver, BC,
to Portland, OR, in fog realized his gas was running low. Customs and
immigration officials, hearing the plane make passes over their buildings,
turned all of their lights on and directed motorists to turn their
headlights on a 200-m stretch of highway. The aircraft glided down to the
lighted strip and coasted within a few metres of the immigration building.
