1868: A violent storm visited Prince Edward County in Ontario. At the
storm's peak, lightning struck the barn of a Sophiasburgh resident,
consuming its contents, which included several horses and a quantity of
grain. The conflagration was said to have illuminated the heavens to a great
extent.

2004: The air quality index climbed to 103 in downtown Hamilton, ON-the
worst smog level ever attained in Ontario, and the latest smog advisory ever
issued by the province. The culprit pollutant was fine particulate matter
coming from vehicles, industry, and road dust. Between the Niagara
Escarpment and Lake Ontario, the sinking air over Hamilton trapped all the
city's pollutants in the downtown.

1840: A gale, among the most severe in 20 years, assaulted Saint John, NB.
Waves ran to a great height, sending spray a long way and at one time
immersing the Beacon Lighthouse. Wind-wave action damaged several smaller
vessels in the harbour and forced many large vessels from their moorings.
Two men on a raft drowned. The gale also razed 2 buildings, carrying off
parts of their leaden roofs.

1933: Québec and the Maritimes slowly returned to normal after 48 hours of
record snowfall and rain caused several deaths, massive damage, and traffic
disruptions. In New Brunswick, the Big Salmon River rose 2 m in 90 minutes,
leaving 7 loggers dead. Within 15 minutes of wading out to a sandbar in
midstream, they were claimed by the swirling water. Tragically, those on
shore could not help them.

1908: A blizzard stalled trains in heavily bushed areas of northern
Saskatchewan for 2 days. The storm drove 2,500 sheep into a lake, where they
perished. A young rancher lightly clad in a sweater and no coat and with
neither matches nor food left home to look for his herd. Although 25
settlers searched for him for 2 days, they found no trace of him.

Montreal's rainiest year in 65 years (1,073.4 mm and counting), surpassing
its previous 12-month record (1,034.6 mm), set only last year. The average
total for 1971 to 2000 is 766 mm; in 2006, Montreal got 1,225.2 mm of rain
(about 60% above normal).
