 Today's weather trivia: 9 March 2007: Snow and high wind led to
chain-reaction crashes of cars, trucks, vans, motorcoaches, and school buses
on Highway 400 from Toronto to Barrie, ON. Near Newmarket, the driver of a
car "submarined" under a semi-trailer was trapped for 4 hours in a -37°C
wind chill until a crane lifted the semi and he was cut from the wreckage.
Despite frostbite, bruises, and a broken ankle, he survived.

The wind continued to blow yesterday and was at gale force for the day and
overnight.The wind will stay brisk until Sunday when the low pressure system
is expected to break up.Unlike the New England states,we had no snow and
there is none expected with this storm other than a few flurries.Temps will
be a few degrees above what is considered normal with even warmer temps
expected next week.

 Today's weather trivia: 8 March 2005: A 2 1/2 year old black cat called Mr.
Mudpie rallied from a severe bout of hypothermia. A few weeks earlier, the
Guelph, ON, Humane Society found the cat frozen in a mud puddle. Near death,
he was too weak to move, there were signs of frostbite on the tips of his
ears and a scab on his nose, and fur was missing from the bottoms of his
front feet.

 Today's weather trivia: 7 March 2011: A storm hit Quebec and New Brunswick
with up to 70 cm of snow. In Sherbrooke, QC, more than 75 cm of snow fell in
24 hours, shutting down schools, city facilities, and roads. It took 10 days
to clear away the snow. Police took the exceptional step of urging residents
not to leave their homes. Those who ventured out, used snowshoes, skis, and
even snowboards to get around.

 Today's weather trivia: 5 March 1944: A group of loggers at a camp 40 km
east of Pine Falls, MB, waited hours in a blinding blizzard in order to
donate blood to the Canadian Red Cross. Snow-blocked roads prevented the
medical staff from arriving. By the time they did arrive, they were faced by
a gang of food-starved donors. Despite the weather, the staff reported an
exceptionally high blood count.

 Today's weather trivia: 4 March 2009: Officials evacuated 24 people from a
trailer park near Truro, NS, after ice-jammed flooding on the Salmon River.
In Pictou County, people watched the ice-clogged and "noisy" East River rise
4 m high. Pieces of equipment, building materials, unoccupied kennels, and
other debris bobbed in the waters. Ice cakes, 1 m thick, floated about,
rumbling and crushing everything in riverside yards.

 Today's weather trivia: 3 March 1941: A young farm boy walked 15 km through
snowdrifts in -25°C weather to enlist in the army at Innisfree, AB, but was
rejected by medical officers. He remarked, "It's a funny thing that I can
walk 9 miles here and 9 miles return and still not be fit enough to join
up." Recruiting officers were impressed by his spirit and that of countless
others, but he was too young and too short.
