possibility that we will have some flurries over the next couple of days but

the river. She crawled onto the lake ice, but it gave way. She swam to her
son and dragged him to shore. The fire chief said the buoyancy of the boy's
gabardine snowsuit kept him afloat.

Yesterday was a very cold day with extremely low air temps and windchills.At
some point throughout the overnight hours the windchill values were very
close to -30C.The cold weather is expected to remain in place for the next 4
or 5 days but will ease some starting tomorrow and rise to more normal
values.

 Today's weather trivia: 24 January 1924: A large icicle crashed 12 m from a
roof, fracturing the skull of a Montreal teen walking to work. He suffered a
fatal 10-cm gash to the top of his skull. In addition, he sustained a
fractured shin and a number of minor injuries. Police arrested the owner of
the house and charged him with violating a bylaw regarding cleaning snow and
ice from rooftops. He pleaded guilty and was fined $25 and costs.

Yesterday was a real winter day here with cold temps,snow and gusty North
winds.The snow ended in the early afternoon and left about 10cms
behind.There were a few flurries throughout the afternoon,the evening was

the next few days.

 Today's weather trivia: 23 January 1877: West of Greensville, ON, a horse
attached to a sleigh was snowed in, only its head poking through the deep
snowdrift. The horse's owner had stopped at a street corner for a long time,
so his horse started home without him but only succeeded in getting part of
the way. The horse had to be dug out of the drift.

track northeastward today. Snow associated with the system will spread

22 January 2010: Alone on the Arctic Ocean, a stranded Inuk hunter was
rescued almost 3 days after the ice floe he was snowmobiling across broke
away and began floating across the Northwest Passage. Rescue by plane and
helicopter had been repeatedly hindered by high winds, snow, and mechanical
problems. Eventually, rescue planes dropped a tent, a stove, food, and extra
satellite-phone batteries.

Yesterday was quite mild with afternoon temps in the lower double digits.The
wind was somewhat brisk from the West causing a bit of windchill.The wind
tapered off in the evening and temps remained on the plus side under mostly
clear skies.Overnight the temps dropped to a few degrees below freezing and
the wind switched to NW.Temps will continue to drop and some very cold temps
are expected this week.There is also a possibility of some snow for
tomorrow.Amounts should not be too significant,maybe 10cms, but,with the
colder temps and wind,expect it to be blown about in open areas.

 Today's weather trivia:
21 January 1929: Floods that drowned 3 at railway washouts in Eastern
Ontario and caused enormous property damage receded following colder weather
and drying winds. In Belleville several horses and cattle drowned, and
residents were marooned with many narrow escapes. In one incident,
floodwaters completely covered a vehicle east of Belleville, trapping 5
young people inside. One person swam 200 m to for help.

Temps warmed up substantially yesterday and there was some snow in the
morning that turned to rain.The temps remained above freezing throughout the
day and overnight.There is a possibility of some precip this morning but the
afternoon is expected to be partly sunny and mild.Temps will drop to below
freezing tonight and tomorrow will be a seasonable day.Some snow is on the
way for Tuesday,amounts are unclear at this time.

20 January 1952: A brutal cold spell gripped most of northwestern Canada. It
was -54°C in parts of Yukon. Dense ice fog forced airlines to cancel
flights. Taxis did a huge business; grocery delivery boys were the busiest
people in town. At such cold, there is a hissing sound caused by one's
breath freezing. Small patches of ice fog were seen hanging over sleeping
huskies.
