Digging out of 5-m snowdrifts in winds approaching 200 km/h was hard. The
storm blocked city streets and cut off power and telephone service. The only
way out was on foot. A snow slide at China Rock near the harbour entrance
suffocated 5 people. Nine others were trapped, one of them for 12 hours.

sea. They paddled for 7 days in an inflated raft, with only emergency
rations, a rifle, and some walrus meat, before reaching land. They trekked 4
days over rough terrain to reach Port Burwell, weary but safe.

mild temperatures and heavy rains had washed it away. How desperate were the
organizers? At the Blow-Me-Down resort, where the biathlon and the
cross-country ski events were scheduled, they resorted to ¿snow dances.¿

areas seemed to take the brunt of the storm with lots of wind damage from
Shelburne to Yarmouth.
