May 1,2003: North of Edmonton, AB, a 10-year-old girl went missing for 21 hours, spending the night lost in cold, snowy weather. More than 100 people searched for her, along with search dogs and an RCMP helicopter. When the girl saw the chopper fly over, she put her coat on the ground. The coat's colour stood out against the white snow and brown and green vegetation and made her easy to spot.– Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

Today is May Day, one of four cross-quarter days, which come roughly half way between a solstice and an equinox. In many older calendars, these dates marked the beginnings of the seasons, not their mid-points.

April 30,2003: With bad weather forecast, officials delayed opening the Prince Edward Island and North Shore lobster season. When foul weather failed to materialize, frustrated fishers were outraged over losing a day's revenue in an already short season. A lost day early in the season is especially harmful because catches are more plentiful and the meat is tastier than later in the season.– Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

April 29,1875: A fierce gale blew most of the day in the London, ON, area. On the outskirts, the wind ripped boards from fences and sent them hurtling through the air, lifted roof shingles, and tossed bricks afar. Pedestrians found their progress accelerated or impeded. In the city, the west and south walls of a newly constructed building swayed with the wind and scaffolding was carried away.– Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

April 28,2007: Flocks of tens of millions of small migrating birds, mainly warblers, vireos, and swallows, moving north to Canada showed up as rain showers on U.S. weather radar screens. Blue blotches (for light rain) began to dot radar images from the Mississippi Valley east to the Atlantic. Many songbirds weigh only a few dozen grams but, being mostly water, produce a powerful return signal for radar. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

Today’s Weather Trivia:

April 27,2007: A common Prairie weather superstition is that 6 months following a frost day comes a heavy rain. Widespread hoarfrost last November had grain growers near Porcupine, SK, worried that copious April rains would lead to flooded fields for a 3rd consecutive year. And, yet again, spring runoff led to washed-out roads and waterlogged farmland. Several farmers were unlikely to seed again. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada
