Today's weather trivia: 10 November

1975: U.S. scientists had solved the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on
Lake Superior. In the worst-possible location at the storm's peak, the 218-m
ore carrier was broadsided by 110 km/h west-to-east winds, hurricane-force
gusts, and 7.5-m waves (likely not seen before by its captain) as it ran
south to reach safety in Whitefish Bay. The vessel would have survived 6
hours earlier or later.

2009: A truck carrying 900 beehives crashed near Grindrod, BC, closing the
highway as police, helped by local beekeepers, worked to clear the road and
salvage the hives. Because the weather was cool (3.5°C), the bees were not
too agitated and did not stray far from the accident. Due to dwindling bee
populations across Canada, about 1 in every 10 hives hits the road for
national pollination tours.

2004: A tug towing two barges northwest of Vancouver, BC, vanished. Search
vessels battled gale-strength winds, poor visibility, rain, and choppy seas.
Rescuers located a debris field and an empty life raft but no other signs of
life. The tug likely sank in 250 m of water to the bottom of the Strait of
Georgia. The strong current may have moved the barge and the bodies a fair
distance from the sinking.

known as the "Storm of the Century"-the greatest disaster ever to hit the
Great Lakes. At the peak of the storm, 145 km/h winds and 10.5-metre waves
pummeled the shore. Ironically, until then, trade magazines had been
celebrating a safe shipping season.
