Loud peals of thunder added to the cacophony. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

5 August 2007: In Prince Edward Island, rivers and streams turned red following yesterday's 45 mm of rain; a week earlier, 1,000s of dead fish were found in the Dunk and Tryon rivers. In each case, high-intensity rain had caused silt and chemical runoff to contaminate the water. The recent storm also packed fierce winds that uprooted trees, and a Tignish resident claimed a twister destroyed his barn. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada

Today’s Weather Trivia:
1 August 2005: According to a UFO-monitoring group, UFO reports in Canada were down by 36% from the same time last year. This dearth of reported sightings was surprising as, in summer, people at cottages or camping out look at the sky more. The fact that it was the wettest summer on record in Canada and largely overcast skies prevailed even when it was not raining might explain the low number. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada
