1898: Described in newspapers as "a gyrating monster," a tornado carved a
path of desctruction near St. Catharines, ON, through Merriton, and south of
Niagara Falls. It destroyed 15 homes and several factories. Worst hit was
the Lincoln Paper Mill where 2 people were killed when the roof fell on 100
workers. At Merriton, flying debris killed an infant in her mother's arms as
she ran for the cellar.
